University Philharmonia Orchestra: U-M Music School.
Jayce Ogren directs this music student ensemble in contemporary American composer Valerie Coleman’s Seven O’Clock Shout, the Intermezzo from early 20th-century Swedish composer Wilhelm Stenhammar’s cantata Sången, and a performance of French composer Ida Gotkovsky’s Trombone Concerto featuring trombone soloist Yuki Mori, winner of the U-M student concerto competition. The program concludes with Schoenberg’s brilliant orchestral transcription of Brahms’ Piano Quartet in G minor, a treatment that effectively transforms the chamber piece into a symphony, giving each member of the orchestra an opportunity to shine. 8 p.m., Hill Auditorium. Free. 764-2538.
