“The Pilot Project”: U-M Gilbert and Sullivan Society

June 9 & 10. David Andrews directs this accomplished town-and-gown company in his new adaptation of The Pirates of Penzance, Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic operetta about young love on the high seas. In his version Andrews retains the original score (with some rewritten lyrics) while entirely reworking the libretto into a sequel that takes place 44 years after the original. Set on the shores of Lake Michigan during Prohibition, the farcical plot centers on an aging boat pilot who schemes to turn in his rum-running employer to impress a long-lost love who heads an international temperance union. But his plans get thrown for a loop when he discovers that he can’t get out of his contract and must continue to work for the bootleggers. 7:30 (Fri.) and 2 & 8 p.m. (Sat.), Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre, 911 N. University. Tickets $20 (seniors, $15; students, $10) in advance at muto.umich.edu and at the door. 647–8436.
