Javanese Gamelan Concert: U-M School of Music.
The music school’s popular town-gown Gamelan Ensemble presents a program of traditional percussive music from the Indonesian island of Java. A gamelan is an assembly of 50 gongs and metallophones, drums, strings, flutes, xylophone, and singers, and the music made with it is a gorgeous concatenation of nonharmonic melodies built on cycles marked by the largest gong and subdivided by the other instruments. 8 p.m., SMTD Hankinson Rehearsal Hall, E.V. Moore Bldg., 1100 Baits Drive. Free. 615–3204.
