Auditions 'The C.E.O.': University of Michigan Gilbert & Sullivan Society (UMGASS)

The University of Michigan Gilbert & Sullivan Society (UMGASS) is looking for singer/actors who would like to be part of a production that combines W.S. Gilbert’s cleverest characters with many of Arthur Sullivan’s most-loved melodies, all adapted using a twist that drops them down in the middle of a Midwestern college campus with which you are undoubtedly familiar. This production merges the music of ‘The Mikado’ with a revised libretto that retains much of Gilbert’s humor, but which has been updated to a modern, local setting.
The result is ‘The C.E.O, or The Widget Company,’ with roles available for SATB principals and chorus; all principal roles parallel the voice parts and narrative function of those found in the original script and score. The production will be performed concert-style on Friday, June 3rd at 7:30 pm, and Saturday, June 4th at 2:00 pm and 8:00 pm in the Arthur Miller Theatre on U-M’s North Campus.
Rehearsals will be held Sundays at 2:00 pm (except May 29th) and Tuesdays at 7:00 pm at the Student Theatre Arts Complex (STAC), 1202 Kipke Dr., Ann Arbor (across the parking lot from the U-M football stadium), beginning on May 8th, 2022.
Two audition methods are available:
1. Send video of yourself singing (with live or recorded accompaniment, as available) or a link to a performance posted online, that includes a song from musical theater, comic opera, or grand opera (in English), to umgassexec@umich.edu, by midnight on Monday, May 2nd, 2022. If you are interested in a principal (speaking) role, the video must also include a comic monologue or dialogue scene (also in English, please!), or…
2. Perform approximately 32 – 64 bars of a song from musical theater, comic opera, or grand opera (in English) at our live auditions on Tuesday, May 3rd, 2022, from 7:00 – 10:00 pm, at STAC (see the address above). Please provide sheet music for the accompanist, and an additional copy (if available) for the auditors. Be prepared to read from the libretto if you are interested in a principal role.
Audition appointments are available at umgassexec@umich.edu, and walk-ins are welcome through 9:00 pm on the audition night.
Affiliation with the University of Michigan is not required to participate in this project.
(If you appeared at our previous round of auditions, or have already provided a recording, you do not need to audition again, unless you want to be considered for additional roles.)
PLEASE NOTE: At this time masks are required indoors for all vocal music activities at U-M. Performers and other participants in this production are required to be vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19. Rehearsals and performances will be conducted in accordance with U-M guidelines regarding the evolving public health situation.
