Dec. 29-31. Three-night showcase of local and Michigan bands in a wide spectrum of genres. 6 different bands each night. A benefit for the nonprofit youth tutoring and writing center 826michigan. $10 per night. 8 p.m.-1:30 a.m. (doors open at 7 p.m.). Zal Gaz Grotto: Phil Ogilvie's Rhythm Kings
This local 10-piece big band is one of the few to specialize in the old- time big-band music of the late 1920s and early 1930s associated with Jelly Roll Morton and King Oliver. Arrangements by the renowned early-jazz pianist James Dapogny and tubaist Chris Smith.
