 8 p.m.

Elvis Costello: Live Nation.

Ann Arbor Observer tree logo   < less

One of the most creative and versatile voices of contemporary rock 'n' roll, Costello first appeared in the late 70s as part of the British "new wave," a category he quickly transcended. With his brainy lyrics about all manner of private and public infidelities, canny melodic sense, stylistic versatility, and barbed vocal style that's alternately harsh and tender, Costello is routinely identified as the true heir of such disparate predecessors as Bob Dylan, Buddy Holly, and Cole Porter. His current show features hits and obscurities from throughout his more than 40-year songwriting career, and he's backed by The Imposters, his longtime band.
Michigan Theater. Tickets $65-$280 in advance at TicketMaster.com & all Ticketmaster outlets, and (if available) at the door. Masks & proof of vaccination (or negative Covid test within past 72 hours) required for all patrons over the age of 12. (800) 745-3000. [map]

Sally Barris: Green Wood Coffee House Series (First United Methodist Church).

Ann Arbor Observer tree logo   < less

Nashville-based alt-country singer-songwriter who sings in a high mountain soprano. Her folk- and Celtic-flavored songs have provided hits for the likes of Martina McBride and Lee Ann Womack. "Sally Barris has a voice like sparkling crystal. Her writing is from a deep, yet innocent, place and her point of view is just a bit off center. It reminds me of the first time I heard Beth Nielson-Chapman or Nanci Griffith," says country and bluegrass singer Kathy Mattea.
