The Richard Pohrt Jr. Collection contains some 1,470 photographs related to Native Americans and their history, taken mainly between 1860 and 1920 by more than 150 photographers. The majority of photographs are of people from tribes west of the Mississippi, with the Apache, Cheyenne, Crow, and Lakota/Dakota particularly well represented.
Both studio and outdoor photographs reflect the dramatic upheavals in Native American life from the expansion of the United States of America. Our speaker, Jakob Dopp, will discuss some of the challenges of cataloging this collection and other aspects of the project, including collaboration with Native American Tribal authorities and other consultants about how to deal with culturally sensitive materials and dissemination
