In this class, we will develop "literacy autobiographies." Through some readings, brief reflective writing assignments and discussion, we'll explore our personal histories and experiences with reading.
Class 1: What happens while we are reading? Class 2: How did we learn to read in our first (or second or third) language? Class 3: What are our personal and professional reading experiences/contexts? Class 4: What is the impact of all things digital (audiobooks, screen vs. paper, etc.)?
Instructor Alice Horning is retired from Oakland U where she taught writing and linguistics for more than 30 years.

"How to Avoid a Climate Disaster": Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+).

This Study Group will be online. We will read and discuss the title book by Bill Gates, who spent a decade consulting with physical scientists, political scientists and leaders in finance to find the most acceptable ways to restrict climate change. He describes the breakthroughs needed in science and public policies to convince and create a consensus throughout the public and private sectors across the world. Gates details a plan for reaching zero emissions and he talks about what each of us can do.
Gerry Lapidus has conducted OLLI book discussions since 2005. The classes are informal and conversational. He leads the first week's discussion and requests volunteers to lead the remaining sessions while he serves as moderator.

This Study Group will be online.
Our study group not only studies, we actively use any art material available to us. The students are experienced painters as well as novices. We do our homework and see weekly videos pertaining to art and help each other navigate Zoom as well as the world of art.
We also appreciate each other's work and the growth we see and talk about our common interests and goals.
Study group leader Barbara Anderson is a retired special education teacher who used art to help teach children as they learned in different ways, ways that made sense to them. Since I retiring she has taken many classes and learned from expert teachers.

There will be group discussion of how Capitalism devolved over the past 60 years and possible changes to elevate humanity through business (conscious capitalism). "Art History IV: Early Medieval Art in the West": Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+).

Following the enthusiastic reception of the three art history courses that I taught in Fall 2020 and Winter 2021, I am offering Art History IV, which continues the history of art and architecture with the courtly art of the Carolingian and Ottonian empires as well as the unrestrained exuberance of Hiberno-Saxon art in the British Isles and Scandinavian art of the 9th through 11th centuries.
A goal of the course is to practice "close looking," in order to understand the multiples meanings of the art. The course will interest learners who have traveled in Western Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean.

This group is co-led by Richard Garrett and Margaret Pooler. Richard is an economist, who retired from college teaching in the New York City area, and moved to Ann Arbor in 2020. He has been active in OLLI since then. Margaret, also an Ann Arbor resident, is a retired librarian who has been active in OLLI for many years.

"Mysteries in Our Cosmic Backyard: What We Do and Do Not Know About the Solar System": Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

There is a common misconception, even among some astronomers, that there is little left to discover in our Solar System. However, many mysteries still remain even about our cosmic backyard. Do we have another, hidden planet? Was there life on Venus, Mars, or even an icy ocean moon?
We will cover recent, exciting research from the Sun to beyond Pluto, as well as any questions you have about the Solar System. This study group will last for 13 weeks and will be a combination of online lectures and student-driven discussions/learning. No previous math, physics, or astronomy knowledge is required.
Larissa Markwardt is a 5th year graduate student at UM. She studies special asteroids called Trojans, which are orbital companions to most of our planets.

"Staying Safe With Your Computer and Phone": Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

Two fun and productive sessions to help you put an end to your computer and smartphone fears and enjoy your technology more. During the first session, we will examine how to browse the internet safely, avoid being tracked by advertisers, and stop malware dead in its tracks.
During the second session, we will focus on how to get all of your passwords under control and improve password security. We'll also take a look at the latest computer and phone scams that plague our society and how to avoid them.
A long-time technology educator, study group leader Jim Keen holds a B.A. (communications) and an M.A. (educational studies) from the University of Michigan. He currently owns and operates Keen Focus Technology Tutoring.

"Caravans, Cultures, and Chinggis Khan along the Silk Route": Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+).

This Study Group will be online.
The Silk Route is a collection of pathways that link China to Vienna, Istanbul, Baghdad, and India across the Inner Asian steppe and desert. During our meetings participants will discuss the Silk Route as a cultural conduit, on the one hand, as the source of empire and technologies, on the other, and look at specific examples of cultural dissemination.
The Silk Route has provided some of the most engaging and best written volumes of travel literature. There will be no required readings, but students may enjoy Owen Lattimore's The Desert Road to Turkestan, or the Franciscan William of Rubruck's account of his journey to Karakorum in 1255, where he found a Parisian goldsmith preparing a soft drink dispenser for the Khan.

"The Origin and Evolution of Earth I": Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

The class will follow Earth from the Big Bang to the formation of continents using Robert Hazen's excellent DVD lectures from the Teaching Company supplemented with the latest findings. We'll view two 30 minute lectures per class, each followed by 20 minutes for questions and discussion. (The full course has 48 lectures; we'll cover the first 24 in the fall with the final 24 in the spring.)
Study group leader Dick Chase has worked 27 years as a research physicist for Ford and taught physics at several levels. At OLLI, he has taught 20 science courses and led 5 book discussion groups.

We will read and discuss this famous Roman epic poem (Robert Fagles' translation, Penguin Classics), which has been a key part of the Western canon for centuries. In addition, we will read and/or watch later interpretations of the hero Aeneas and his ill-fated love affair with Queen Dido.

In 2021, for the first time in Michigan history, an Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission is drawing the boundaries of Michigan's state legislative and U.S. congressional districts with input from the public.
Our speaker, Professor Kevin Deegan-Krause, from Voters Not Politicians will explain how the new redistricting process has worked, who has participated, where things stand right now, and what to expect when the Commission completes the new redistricting in January 2022.

This group meets every week from September to June except for holidays. There are no specific assignments. Each writer strives to find his or her own subject matter and stylistic voice. We read our work aloud and discuss it, making constructive suggestions for improvement. The important thing is to write well enough to interest others and to convey our ideas clearly. Participants are expected to read their work regularly. During the pandemic, we will use a combination of email and videoconferencing.
Instructor Eleanor Linn has led this group since 2014. She is a published author.
