Wednesday Workshops: Ann Arbor Senior Center
“Little Trees, Big Impact: 10th Anniversary Celebration”: Ann Arbor Bonsai Society
June 1–30. Month-long celebration of the Matthaei Bonsai Garden’s 10th year, with themed weeks, pop-up pruning demos in the garden, family-friendly activities, and workshops for all levels (June 17 & 18, see website for information). June 17 (1–4 p.m.): Bonsai Expert Demonstrations. Well-known Japanese Satsuki experts Hiroharu Kobayashi and Yoichi Fukudan demonstrate their work with hearty Satsuki azaleas on the Matthaei commons. June 24 (10 a.m.–noon): Basics of Bonsai for Families. Kids ages 7–14 invited with their families to explore the bonsai collection, learn about the art, and practice some simple techniques themselves. Preregistration required. June 25 (12:30–2 p.m.): Bonsai Stories for Families. Kids ages 7–14 invited with their families to write and illustrate stories inspired by the bonsai collection. $8/kid, preregistration required. See 9 Friday. Tonight in the Kidzone: A2Zero offers zero waste games and activities (5 p.m.). On the Power Center Lawn: Capoeira (5:30 p.m.), an Afro-Brazilian dance martial art, with Ann Arbor Capoeira. In the Annex tent: a chance to view the sun through the U-M Detroit Observatory’s telescopes (4 p.m.) and, after sunset, view the night sky. On the O&W Grove Stage: Jill Goven (5 p.m.), a Detroit-based soul singer who pairs sultry vocals with acoustic-driven grooves. Also, Detroit folk singer-songwriter Audra Kubat (6 p.m.). On the Rackham Stage: Al Bettis (7 p.m.), a Detroit singer-songwriter whose music blends jazzy acoustic guitar with thoughtful, complex R&B lyrics. Also, Madison McFerrin (8:15 p.m.), an up-and-coming L.A.-based R&B singer who layers soulful vocals over jazzy live looping tracks. The music is followed at 10 p.m. by a screening of Everything Everywhere All at Once, Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert’s Oscar-winning 2022 action comedy fantasy about a middle-aged Chinese immigrant on a mission to save the universe by exploring her other lives in alternate realities. 5 p.m.–midnight.
“West Side Nite Ride”: Ann Arbor Bicycle Touring Society
Every Wed. Slow/moderate-paced ride, 10 to 30 miles, along the B2B Trail to Hudson Mills Metropark and/or Dexter-Huron Metropark with a possible visit to the Dexter Dairy Queen. Chuchito Valdez: Blue LLama Jazz Club
Following in the footsteps of his famed father Chucho Valdés and grandfather Bebo Valdés, Chuchito Valdés continues the legacy of great piano players from Cuba. This piano master captivates with his sensitivity and drives excitement with his dynamic band. Chuchito is recognized as a master of Cuban music including Son, Danzon, Cuban Timba and Guaguanco. He has also extensively studied classical music including harmony and composition. His original compositions and arrangements draw on classical harmonic and structural techniques. In his performances, Chuchito’s music draws on many styles including Afro-Cuban Latin Jazz, Bebop, Danzon, Cha-Cha-Cha, Son Montuno and much more.

Documentary (Arthur Dong, 1989) using archival footage about Forbidden City, an all-Chinese San Francisco nightclub that flourished in the 1930s and 40s. Hot Club Wednesday: Djangophonique: N/A
Djangophonique is a virtuosic, instrumentally driven quartet led by guitar player Andrew Brown. With over a decade of national touring experience, Brown is no stranger to the stage and delivers every performance with personality and enigmatic charm. A true disciple of the style, Brown has spent countless hours immersing himself in the language of Django Reinhardt’s jazz manouche, and he’s joined on stage by bandmates that match his skill and passion for the material. The result is a sound that’s unmistakable to fans of the music, and alluring to the uninitiated—a sound that can bring the lively energy of a parisian dance hall to the quietest listening room or captivate a buzzing festival audience with a shimmering ballad.
