Gift of the Tao Qigong with Chris Gilbert: Enlightened Soul Center & Shop
Over the past several decades Qigong has become more well known in West. Similar in some respects to Yoga and Tai Chi, it consists of gentle movements and meditation methods to balance and activate the vital life force, Qi, of our body and mind, assisting with health and well-being. At the deeper level, in the form of Qigong called Neigong, it can lead us to reconnecting and acting through our Higher Level Self. For the past 11 years I have been practicing Gift of the Tao and Stillness-Movement Neigong as developed by Michael Lomax, who in turn learned from the late Wang Juemin, a Qigong Master who practiced at the Baoding Qigong Hospital in China.
In class I go over the difference between using mental force versus direct engagement with the Qi, then lead people through the best Qigong movements for activating Qi, and lead into sitting and standing meditations that connect one to Earth and Heaven Qi, and from there to their Higher Level Self.

Cocktail Class: Farm-to-Glass Cocktails: Tammy's Tastings
It’s nearly summer and the Farmer’s Market is beginning to burgeon with goodness. This class is about incorporating all of our wonderful local produce – herbs, cucumbers, berries, tomatoes – into cocktails. We’ll learn all about muddling, infusing, and even shrubs. June is strawberry season here in Michigan, so we’ll be putting extra focus on that berry for the fruit section of the class.
Your booking includes light snacks (pretzels, nuts). The Last Word is closed during the class, so no food service is available. The class includes a combination of history and stories, technique instruction, and hands-on making of cocktails. Plus sampling, of course! Total consumption is equivalent to around cocktails per person over the 2 hour class.

“Much Ado About Nothing”: U-M Residential College/Nichols Arboretum
June 1–4, 8–11, 15–18, & 22–25. Carol Gray, Rob Sulewski, & Graham Atkin direct students and local actors in an alfresco production of Shakespeare’s sharp-tongued comedy that begins in the valley and moves across the Arb to conclude in the peony garden. The high-spirited plot involves 2 pairs of young lovers. One couple, both disdainful of love, are tricked into acknowledging each other, while the other couple’s love is nearly ruined by a deception that, abetted by the paranoia of returning military heroes, leads to trumped-up charges of infidelity. The play is best known for its charged sexual banter and for the penetrating wit and often dark cast of its humor. This year’s production is the first not under the supervision of Shakespeare in the Arb founder Kate Mendeloff, who passed away from cancer this April. Audience members should be prepared for light weather conditions, periods of sitting, standing and walking. 6:30 p.m., meet at the Peony Garden entrance at 1610 Washington Heights. $25 (Matthaei-Nichols members, $20; students, $15) in advance only. Tickets go on sale May 22 (May 15 for members) at mutotix.umich.edu & the Michigan Union Ticket Office and are held at will call at the Arboretum Visitor Center. 998–9540.
