Dawn Avery Presentation: “Native Classical: Musical Modernities, Indigenous Research Methodologies, and a Kanienkéha (Mohawk) Concept of Non:wa (Now)”: U-M School of Music, Theatre & Dance
Dawn Avery presents on processes of decolonizing performance, ethnographic research, music theory and analysis in the context of Native American Indian contemporary music from her own downtempo, classical and theatre music, as well as the music of other Indigenous contemporary classical composers. Avery applies the Kanienkéha (Mohawk) concept of non:wa or “now” that also refers to three modes of perception––the now of the past, the present, and the future––toward understanding the intersection of innovation and tradition in classical Native music.

Role Model: Music Matters SpringFest
Role Model is the stage name for L.A.-based singer-songwriter Tucker Pillsbury, who began his career as a rapper and now sings lo-fi indie pop that features mellow, repetitive melodies accompanied by acoustic guitar samples and occasional trap beats. His 2022 debut album, RX, is an intimate, and at times raunchy, ode to his not-so-secret romance with social media influencer Emma Chamberlain. Opener is up-and-coming Nashville R&B singer Eley. Tonight’s show is the headlining concert for SpringFest, a daylong festival held on the U-M Diag, organized by students, that features live music by student bands (TBA) as well as information booths for student entrepreneurs and organizations. 7 p.m., Michigan Theater. University Philharmonia Orchestra: U-M School of Music
Jayce Ogren directs this music student ensemble in Mozart’s intense and enigmatic Symphony No. 40 in G Minor, Stravinsky’s Symphony in Three Movements, and early 20th-century Austrian-American composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Cello Concerto, a piece originally written for the 1946 noir film Deception.
