Auditions for The Pirates of Penzance: UMGASS
More

The University of Michigan Gilbert & Sullivan Society (UMGASS) is holding auditions for The Pirates of Penzance, or The Slave of Duty, on Monday, September 12th, Tuesday, September 13th, and Wednesday, September 14th, 2022, at the Student Theater Arts Complex (STAC), 1202 Kipke Drive in Ann Arbor (east of the U-M stadium) from 7– 10 pm. All roles are available for SATB principals and chorus; cast will be selected from the audition pool with no pre-casting. Affiliation with the University of Michigan is not required.

To sign up for an audition time please contact the UMGASS Executive Board by e-mail at umgassexec@umich.edu, or sign up in person at the UMGASS Mass Meeting on Sunday, September 11th at 7:00 pm at the Michigan League. Walk-ins are also welcome in the first two hours of the audition period each day. Callbacks may be held on the evening of Thursday, September 15th, 2022.

Prepare ~32-64 bars of a selection from musical theater, comic opera, or opera (in English), and provide two legible copies (one each for the auditors and the accompanist). Be prepared to read selections from the libretto if you are interested in a speaking role. There will be no dance audition; please indicate your dance experience on the audition form.

Rehearsals will begin on September 18th, 2022, and will be scheduled for Sundays at 2:00 pm and Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights at 7:00 pm. Principals and chorus members will each be called for two rehearsals per week for most of the rehearsal period. Production dates are December 8 – 11, 2022, at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theater in the Michigan League, with full staging and full orchestra.

Please note: COVID-19 vaccination is required prior to participation in this production, and masks may be required at rehearsals, depending on the evolving public health situation.

UMGASS is the oldest continuously operating student-run G&S Society in the country (and maybe the world). It was founded at the University of Michigan in 1947, and has produced at least two G&S comic operas every year since (except 2020), including productions of each of the 14 operas in the canon, as well as several other pieces by Gilbert or Sullivan, working alone or with other collaborators. The first UMGASS production debuted on December 10, 1947, and this production will be a part of the celebration of the 75th anniversary of The Society. UMGASS receives no funding from the University of Michigan; performers in these productions are not paid.
