“Little Trees, Big Impact: 10th Anniversary Celebration”: Ann Arbor Bonsai Society
June 1–30. Month-long celebration of the Matthaei Bonsai Garden’s 10th year, with themed weeks, pop-up pruning demos in the garden, family-friendly activities, and workshops for all levels (June 17 & 18, see website for information). June 17 (1–4 p.m.): Bonsai Expert Demonstrations. Well-known Japanese Satsuki experts Hiroharu Kobayashi and Yoichi Fukudan demonstrate their work with hearty Satsuki azaleas on the Matthaei commons. June 24 (10 a.m.–noon): Basics of Bonsai for Families. Kids ages 7–14 invited with their families to explore the bonsai collection, learn about the art, and practice some simple techniques themselves. Preregistration required. “Top of the Park”: Ann Arbor Summer Festival
See 9 Friday. Tonight in the Kidzone: A2Zero offers zero waste games and activities (5 p.m.). On the Power Center Lawn: Capoeira (5:30 p.m.), an Afro-Brazilian dance martial art, with Ann Arbor Capoeira. In the Annex tent: a chance to view the sun through the U-M Detroit Observatory’s telescopes (4 p.m.) and, after sunset, view the night sky. On the O&W Grove Stage: Jill Goven (5 p.m.), a Detroit-based soul singer who pairs sultry vocals with acoustic-driven grooves. Also, Detroit folk singer-songwriter Audra Kubat (6 p.m.). On the Rackham Stage: Al Bettis (7 p.m.), a Detroit singer-songwriter whose music blends jazzy acoustic guitar with thoughtful, complex R&B lyrics. Also, Madison McFerrin (8:15 p.m.), an up-and-coming L.A.-based R&B singer who layers soulful vocals over jazzy live looping tracks. Chuchito Valdez: Blue LLama Jazz Club
Following in the footsteps of his famed father Chucho Valdés and grandfather Bebo Valdés, Chuchito Valdés continues the legacy of great piano players from Cuba. This piano master captivates with his sensitivity and drives excitement with his dynamic band. Chuchito is recognized as a master of Cuban music including Son, Danzon, Cuban Timba and Guaguanco. He has also extensively studied classical music including harmony and composition. His original compositions and arrangements draw on classical harmonic and structural techniques. In his performances, Chuchito’s music draws on many styles including Afro-Cuban Latin Jazz, Bebop, Danzon, Cha-Cha-Cha, Son Montuno and much more.

“Forbidden City, U.S.A.”: Ann Arbor District Library
Documentary (Arthur Dong, 1989) using archival footage about Forbidden City, an all-Chinese San Francisco nightclub that flourished in the 1930s and 40s. Hot Club Wednesday: Djangophonique: N/A
Djangophonique is a virtuosic, instrumentally driven quartet led by guitar player Andrew Brown.
