“Sunrise Nature Hike”: Washtenaw County Parks & Recreation Commission

“Little Trees, Big Impact: 10th Anniversary Celebration”: Ann Arbor Bonsai Society
June 1–30. Month-long celebration of the Matthaei Bonsai Garden’s 10th year, with themed weeks, pop-up pruning demos in the garden, family-friendly activities, and workshops for all levels (June 17 & 18, see website for information). June 17 (1–4 p.m.): Bonsai Expert Demonstrations. Well-known Japanese Satsuki experts Hiroharu Kobayashi and Yoichi Fukudan demonstrate their work with hearty Satsuki azaleas on the Matthaei commons. June 24 (10 a.m.–noon): Basics of Bonsai for Families. Kids ages 7–14 invited with their families to explore the bonsai collection, learn about the art, and practice some simple techniques themselves. Preregistration required. “Japan Week: Wagashi Confectionery Making Demonstration with Toshiko Sugii Steffes”: Ann Arbor District Library
Demonstration on making and decorating nerikiri wagashi representing the four seasons. Wagashi are traditional Japanese confections originally served at tea ceremonies. Nerikiri is a special type of wagashi made using white butter beans, sugar, mochi, and food coloring. 2–3 p.m. & 6–7 p.m., AADL Downtown. Free. 327–4200.

“Top of the Park”: Ann Arbor Summer Festival
See 9 Friday. Tonight: complimentary bike tuneups (6–8 p.m.) by Wheels in Motion bike mechanics on the Ingalls Mall. In the Kidzone: Storytime (5 p.m.) with Booksweet bookshop featuring Michigan children’s writers Stacie Sheldon, Kyunghee Kim, and Aya Khalil. On the Power Center Lawn: Belly dancing (5:30 p.m.) with fitness instructor Sheila May. In the Annex tent: a Bob Ross–style painting workshop (5:30 & 8 p.m.) led by Ann Arbor District Library staff. On the O&W Grove Stage: the popular Chelsea roots-oriented singer-songwriter Rochelle Clark (5 p.m.), and The Dick Siegel Trio (6 p.m.), an ensemble led by veteran local singer-songwriter Siegel, an immensely gifted and versatile composer whose songs offer all sorts of immediate musical and lyrical pleasures, both serious and comic. On the Rackham Stage: the longtime popular local bluegrass band The RFD Boys (7 p.m.), and veteran local rockabilly & Americana band Delta 88 (8:30 p.m.). The music is followed at 10 p.m. by a screening of Muppets Take Manhattan, Frank Oz’s 1984 musical comedy in which Kermit discovers why they say there’s a broken heart for every light on Broadway. Lloyd is not as endearing or impressive as his contemporaries Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, but he is more of an everyman, and his films were higher grossing.
