“The Benefits of Connecting in a Suspicious World”: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at U-M (50+)
This study group will be online. We will read/discuss the book, “The Power of Strangers” by Joe Keohane. As we’ve become increasingly isolated socially, politically, and economically we are losing attributes that support happiness, empathy, and even cognitive functioning. The author draws ideas from a growing body of research that shows even passing interactions with strangers can ease loneliness and provide a deepening sense of belonging. He gathered tips from researchers and tried them out with strangers on the street and in other situations. The results were sometimes awkward or entertaining, but frequently very satisfying. Gerry Lapidus has led discussions since 2005. Please read the prolog and chapters one and two for the first session. This study group will meet Mondays beginning March 14 through April 25.Pre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.Online
