Screening of "Keeping in Mind," (Adam Kulakow, 1989), a documentary about former U-M president Harlan Hatcher's firing of two faculty during the McCarthy witch hunts. The film was made by Kulakow, a U-M undergraduate student, as his honors thesis. Its first screening in 1989 inspired the faculty to create the annual lecture on Academic and Intellectual Freedom. The screening is preceded by free pizza at 4:30 p.m., and followed at 7:30 p.m. by a panel discussion that includes the filmmaker, currently a writer and producer in Los Angeles, U-M civil rights history professor Matthew Countryman, and cultural anthropologist Gayle Rubin, a U-M alumn.
