In May, the faded sign along Ann Arbor-Saline Rd. still read Lodi Food Mart.

“This is an Express Stop,” said store manager William Anderson from behind the counter as he rang up a purchase on a cloudy afternoon.

“I didn’t know that!” said the young woman buying gas and a pack of cigarettes.

“Yep,” said Anderson.

Brighton-based Corrigan Oil owns more than sixty Express Stops. It bought this one at the end of 2016.

Express Stop president Jack Helmick, reached by phone at its Saginaw headquarters, said they’re getting reading to update it, including a new sign.

Anderson, who’d been managing the place since it changed hands, was looking forward to the changes. “We’ll have a whole new food corner with hot and cold sandwiches, chili, and hot dogs,” he said.

But Express Stop’s plans turned out not to include Anderson. When an Observer photographer called to set up a photo, a new manager said Anderson was “no longer with the company”–and directed any further questions to “corporate.”
