“It’s kind of like a miniature Bed Bath & Beyond,” manager Debra Cook says of the Village Attic, the new second-story annex of the Village Apothecary on South University. Garry Turner owns the building as well as the pharmacy, and last year he decided that rather than let the upstairs space lie fallow, he’d try to stock a few things the surrounding undergraduate population might need. He entrusted the task of figuring out just what that might be to Ashley Hayes, twenty, an actual undergraduate—”who happens to be my daughter,” confides manager Cook. “He figured she would know more than either one of us.” Hayes chose and ordered the initial inventory, and her mom points out the stylish high quality (relatively speaking) of the home goods: dishes, clocks, shower-¬curtain rods, canvas bins, beanbag chairs, fans, heaters, sheet sets—all more IKEA than Wal-Mart. There’s also a fine selection of Ray-Ban and DKNY sunglasses.
