The Goodyear Building

I Spy: June 2018

by Sally Bjork

From the July, 2018 issue

June's I Spy "is the upper cornice on the Goodyear Building at 122 S. Main St.," writes Kevin Fielder, alluding to the long-time retail anchor for which the building is now named. "The First National Bank was located there in the 1860s," writes Marta Ruiz, and Goodyear's department store originated in the northernmost portion of the building in 1888. Eventually, explains David Karl, the store expanded to fill the space. They "stayed for over 90 years," writes Dan Romanchik.

Ken Koral predicted that "many old-time Ann Arborites" would enter. They did; we received thirty-seven entries and many memories. Richard Carlton sang Christmas carols there. Bob Baird's wife used to buy cookies there. Judi Taylor recalls the gentleman standing on the sidewalk flower beds calling in customers during Art Fair bargain days. "He reminded me of a circus ringmaster," she says.

It's hard to believe the store has been closed for more than 30 years!" writes Sara Kitzsteiner. "I still have a coat I purchased there."

Our random drawing winner is Alice Ralph, who notes that historic preservation tax credits made the building's 1980s restoration possible. Alice, please let us know where you'd like to take your gift certificate!
