State St. Entrance to the Michigan Union

I Spy: February 2020

by Sally Bjork

From the March, 2020 issue

"There's no mistaking the gorgeous main entrance to the Michigan Union on State Street!" writes Kathleen Peterson about February's feature. Pictured are "the windows, arch and facade directly above the State Street entrance," writes Steve Luongo. Following a twenty-month overhaul, "I went through that door on reopening day," says Betsy Williams. "The renovation was indeed 'more than a facelift,'" she concludes, referencing the clue. Ginny Weingate wrote, "Especially interesting were the tables that were made from the wood of the former bowling lanes."

Kristen Nyht noted that the Union was designed by "architect brothers, Pond & Pond," and that the renovation had enclosed the building's courtyard. It's now a "two story atrium," says Judi Taylor, known as "the Indoor Diag"--an element that was requested by students during the planning phase of the project.

"The covered courtyard is a marvel," writes Barb Tester, who also points out that half of the $85+ million renovation price tag addressed "the infrastructure which was lacking a sprinkler system and in need [of] new heating and cooling systems."

Thirty-one people entered our contest; all but two correctly identified the Union. Our random drawing winner, Judi Taylor, will enjoy a $25 gift certificate to one of our advertisers.

To enter this month's contest, use the image and clue on the March Back Page and send your answer to the address at the bottom of the page.     (end of article)
