Residents of Zaragon Place, the ten-story apartment building on East University near South University, now have an in-house resource: a double business called, with trendy punctuation, revive + replenish. Revive is a cafe and sandwich shop. Replenish is a tiny market on the other side of Zaragon’s entrance, heavily stocked with energy bars and chips and salsa, but also selling fresh produce, meat, and basic groceries.

If both businesses, even in their infancy, appear to have a sort of Ann Arbor brand to them, it’s because they are owned by Red Hawk’s (and, until recently, Zanzibar’s) Dick Schubach, Roger Hewitt, and Marilee Sturtevant. They’ve made the shops a love letter to local produce and artisans: walk into Replenish and among the first things you’ll see are a basket of Zingerman’s brownies, a wall of Mighty Good coffee, and a shelf of Ann Arbor Tortilla Factory chips.

Revive’s coffee also comes from Mighty Good and its bread from Zingerman’s. Its pan-world menu is a melange of Asian, African, and Latin American influences, like salads of black beans or couscous, Vietnamese- and French-inflected sandwiches, and rice bowls topped with peanut-coconut sauce. What might otherwise seem an intimidating worldly menu is smoothed over by familiar and comforting retro mom food. In fact, “retro” is a sandwich category on the menu–chicken, egg, or tuna salad sandwiches on Zingerman’s Bakehouse White.

Schubach loves local entrepreneurs and innovators. Point out any feature of the space, and he quickly names the person responsible, insisting that he or she is a genius. Revive’s digital menu board? It’s actually high-def TVs programmed with PowerPoint–a concept invented by manager Mike Walsh. The glossy, green cabinetry? “Joe Cantelon does the best finish work of anyone I’ve ever met in town. Layers and layers of Italian paint.”

Unfortunately for Zaragon’s residents, there’s no entrance to either business from inside the lobby. “They have to go out the front door and come in from the street,” Schubach says. “We see a lot of kids in their pajamas.”
