Noisy Motorcycles?

Question Corner: December 2018

by Tim Athan

From the December, 2018 issue

Q. Do the police ever ticket the drivers of noisy motorcycles or cars for "disturbing the peace"?

A. Ann Arbor has ordinances limiting vehicle noise. Mopeds, for instance, are limited to eighty-two decibels. Outgoing Ward Five councilmember Chuck Warpehoski emails that the city's "limits seem to be in the mid-point of common practice, but some states such as Connecticut do have lower limits."

AAPD sergeant Bill Clock e-mails that officers occasionally ticket owners of noisy vehicles for "equipment violation." The $100 fee is generally waived once the issue is addressed.
