Man in the City

I Spy: October 2021

by Sally Bjork

From the November, 2021 issue

Standing "atop the old Walker Carriage Works," home of the Ann Arbor Art Center, this "sculpture is watching over" us, writes David Karl, "encouraging passersby to look up." (Coincidentally, this was the motivation for creating "i spy.")

What Barb Tester calls "the orange man on the roof" is "part of the 'Man in the City' project," writes Dave Bicknell. Its creator, John Sauve, "has installed onlookers in several cities, including Benton Harbor, Detroit, Chicago, and New York.

The black-and-white image of what Eric Sobocinski calls the "Man Vane" made it challenging, he writes, because "I always see this when it is lit brightly by an evening sun." The lack of color also threw Ginny Weingate: she knew she had seen it, but just where "was a mystery that haunted me," spurring walks downtown. "My husband ... caught my obsession," and they found it together.

We received seventeen entries. Our random-drawing winner, long-time entrant Dave Bicknell, will enjoy his $25 certificate at Downtown Home & Garden. To enter this month's contest, use the image and clue on the Back Page of the November issue and send your answer to the address on the bottom of the page.     (end of article)
