“My whole philosophy of skin care is really about everything. Lifestyle and diet and even spirituality,” says Katie Westgate, owner of K.WEST Skin Body Soul. Her shop, which carries a variety of crystals, books, supplements, and her own skin care line, occupies the bottom floor of a house on N. Main, while she runs her day spa upstairs.

Originally a web designer with a degree from the U-M, Westgate discovered her love of skin care and spirituality while living in New York City. She studied at an Ayurvedic spa there, and after returning to Ann Arbor opened a small studio above the People’s Food Co-Op. Westgate is a living ad for her practice: she’s thirty-nine, but her face is going on twenty-two.

The move to Main St. coincided with the debut of her K.WEST line of products she’s developed for her custom facials. So far there are Ayurvedic balancing oils, hydration mists, body oils, and facial cleansers. She also sells crystals and polished rocks, all of which have small cards explaining their spiritual properties (blue agate for tranquility, black obsidian to focus and de-stress). Westgate says the jewelry she sells has similar metaphysical properties. Add beeswax candles, Japanese “smokeless” incense, and herbal supplements, and you’re ready to start centering yourself.
