A letter posted on the door of Jerusalem Market in mid-July informed customers that the Middle Eastern market in the Courtyard Shops would close at the end of the month “due to building management.” We couldn’t reach the owners, but on their Facebook page, they write that they were on a “month-to-month lease,” and got an “eviction notice” at the beginning of July. Property managers Broder & Sachse wouldn’t comment on the market’s departure, but a representative emails that a Pilates studio is taking the space.

The market advertised itself as the only halal butcher on the north side of town, and frequent customer Susan Kielb told us she and her husband would regularly stop by for “the best feta, the best pita … and the best hummus.” Kielb says she learned a lot about Middle Eastern food from samples the owner gave her and that “people of all different cultures would come in and talk. It was a real cultural bridge.” Kielb says when she spoke to the owner in July, he was hoping to find a new Ann Arbor location.

Bagger Dave’s closed its Eisenhower location suddenly one weekend in early August along with two others in southeast Michigan. According to employees at neighbor Moe’s Southwest Grill, the “burger tavern” was open one day and being cleared out the next. The closings in Brighton and Woodhaven reportedly happened just as quickly. It couldn’t have helped business here when popular fast-casual burger rival Five Guys moved into Pittsfield Place just across I-94 in 2015.
