Q. Recently I saw a funeral procession with a police escort. Can anyone call the police or sheriff’s department and request an escort? Is there a fee?

A. AAPD Sergeant Bill Clock emails: “AAPD Special Services and WCSO [the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office] will provide escorts when requested. We (AAPD) usually limit it to larger funerals or ones that will have a significant impact on normal city activities. We have not billed anyone for this service that I am aware of.”

Q. Does the law require drivers to defer to funeral processions, or is that just custom and courtesy? For example, if there is a long procession, is it illegal for another driver to cut into the procession?

A. It’s not just a courtesy. Drivers are legally required to yield to a procession marked by flags.
