Ypsilanti, MI. – Have you ever had to crash on a friend’s couch? Struggling all night to find a comfortable position, but no matter how you contort your body, there’s just no keeping the support beam from driving right into your lumbar?

Have you ever had to sleep on the floor? With little more than a couple of blankets and a pillow? Your ribs crushed against thin vinyl tiles as what little warmth you’re able to muster slowly seeps away into the cold ground?

How did you feel the next day? Were you groggy? Did you find it difficult to focus?

How did it affect your life? Did you snap at a friend? Were you curt with a co-worker?

Now imagine having to spend every night like that—having to live every day like that—just because you don’t have a bed.

This is why Friends In Deed of Washtenaw County hosts its Holiday Bed & Crib Drive: to raise funds to purchase beds and cribs for families in our community who do not have access to these most basic pieces of furniture.

Getting a good night’s sleep is critical to health and productivity. It also improves concentration, problem-solving, and physical performance. Meanwhile, poor sleep can lead to depression and provoke negative emotions and social reactions. And that’s not all! In addition to providing a good night’s sleep, a bed gives adults and children a place to call their own.

Unfortunately, there are many, many families in our community who are unable to afford the mattress, bed frame and accessories that are all part of owning a bed. Oftentimes children are made to share beds, while still others have to sleep on blankets on the floor.

Fortunately, Friends In Deed, a non-profit organization based out of Ypsilanti, has been providing low-income families with beds and cribs for decades. Thanks to our annual Holiday Bed & Crib Drive, community members can donate funds to purchase new beds and cribs for low-income families doing without.

Our Holiday Bed & Crib Drive is taking place between November 1st and December 31st. But on December 3rd, Giving Tuesday, Van Winkle Mattress Co. will match 25% of all donations made. In past years, this has resulted in as many as 30 additional beds passed on to our neighbors in the community.

Helping people in need; building community to end poverty.
