Charles Whitman House

June 2019 I Spy

by Sally Bjork

From the July, 2019 issue

"This is the Charles Whitman house at 1007 East Huron," writes Judi Taylor.

"Built in 1891, it is a great example of a Shingle Style house." Barb Tester adds that it was built by "a railroad tycoon," and was home to two fraternities before "the University purchased it in 1936."

"It, along with the two U-M-owned buildings next to it, are scheduled to be replaced by [the] new College (not School!) of Pharmacy" building, writes David Frye, correcting our clue. "The interior has many historic features, which I hope someone rescues before they demolish it," adds pharmacy alum Vivian Loh, who knew the house when the U-M health service used it.

May's I Spy, a detail of a U-M parking structure, stumped everyone--we didn't get a single correct answer, and lost a regular entrant as a result (sorry, Ken; hope you reconsider). By comparison, the Whitman house "was almost too easy!" quips Dan Romanchik, before adding "just kidding."

"FWIW, I thought the May 2019 I Spy was perfect," writes Eric Sobocinski. "Reading the location was an 'Argh!' moment."

We received thirty-eight entries for June. Our random drawing winner, Cathy Chow, will also pocket May's unclaimed prize. Cathy, please let us know where you'd like to take your prize!
