Ann Arbor Cooks! Wine Tasting: The Wines of the Southern Rhone.

community member   < less Ann Arbor Cooks Logo

I must do this one because I personally think these wines are some of the best in the world and are undisputed best values around. The southern Rhone area of France is most famous for Chateauneuf du Pape wines; but there are many more appellations which merit some profiling. Here we also have the regions of Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Lirac, Rasteau, Tavel (for rosé wine), and many other ones which deserve mention but we lack the time for this particular purpose. Most wines just labeled Cotes du Rhone also originate in this large French region. I aim to bring all reds for this one, and this will not be a tasting for the faint of heart. The most predominant grape here is the Grenache, but Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsault, Counoise, and Carignan might also appear in blends. This is a land of blends, just like in many regions of France. Come taste five of these magnificent reds from the excellent 2009 and 2010 vintages, and be prepared to be blown away. Register online 48 hours in advance.
