"The Audience": University Musical Society/National Theatre Live.

Ann Arbor Observer tree logo   < less

Sept. 8 & 10. Tape-delayed live broadcast of a West End production of this new play by British playwright and film writer Peter Morgan, writer of the movies The Queen and Frost/Nixon. The play, directed by Academy Award-nominated director Stephen Daldry, imagines the weekly private meetings at Buckingham Palace between Queen Elizabeth II (Helen Mirren) and the Prime Minister, from Churchill to Cameron, through a series of non-chronological vignettes. According to an Independent (UK) reviewer, Mirren "rises to the daunting technical challenge with a quite uncannily fluid lightness of touch as she shifts back and forth on an age-spectrum of six decades."
7 p.m., Michigan Theater. Tickets $22 (Michigan Theater & UMS members, $18; students, $12) in advance at the Michigan League and ums.org, and (if available) at the door. To charge by phone, call 764-2538 or (800) 221-1229. [map]
