From standup to improv, and everything in between, comedy is flourishing in the auditoriums and clubs of Ann Arbor. And with the U-M's new Media Union, a growing number of multimedia performances are appearing on The Calendar.

"Jeff Daniels: Onstage & Unplugged": Purple Rose Theatre Company.

Dec. 26-29 & 31. Movie and TV star, playwright, and Purple Rose founder Daniels is also a singer-songwriter whose folk-flavored originals include such favorites as "If William Shatner Can, I Can, Too," "The Lifelong Tiger Fan Blues," "State Trooper," and "Recreational Vehicle." His shows are interspersed with chats about how each song came to be. Tonight's show features a mix of old favorites and newer songs. A benefit for Purple Rose.

July 14 & 15.. This Michigan native, named Best Comic in Detroit in 2010 by the Metro Times, specializes in wild, raunchy, politically incorrect, often hilariously demented stories and one-liners about everyday life. Preceded by 2 opening acts. Alcohol is served.

"A Midsummer Night's Dream": Dreamland Theater.

Oct. 19 & 26 and Nov. 2, 9, 16, & 30. The Dreamland Puppet Troupe presents Dreamland owner Naia Venturi's adaptation, with both Venturi's marionettes and Patrick Elkins' shadow puppets, of Shakespeare's delightful comic fantasy about a jealous tiff between the king and queen of the fairies, and the mortals snared in their mischief. With a score by Andrew Bruce Mitchell II. This project was initiated when the Dreamland puppets were used in Arnaud Desplechin's Jimmy P.: The Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian, a nominee for the 2013 Cannes Film Festival Palm d'Or.
