After some thirty years at the corner of Stadium and South Industrial, Kroger failed to come to a lease agreement with the property’s owners, and Boulder-based natural foods grocer Lucky’s Market is slated to take its place in late 2014. The Ufer family–including attorney Robert P. Ufer, son of legendary U-M football announcer Bob Ufer–owns the property. Ufer says Kroger “was reluctant to come up to market rate” with a lease that had been “in place for a long time.” He adds that “Kroger is a great organization, but we agreed as gentlemen to disagree.”

“We’re extremely disappointed we lost the lease on that building,” says Kroger spokesperson Dale Hollandsworth. “We are always looking for new locations–it’s an ongoing activity.” He says all employees at that location will be offered jobs at other Kroger stores.

Lucky’s was started in 2003 by husband-and-wife chefs Bo and Trish Sharon. “They’ll invest substantially in refurbishing the space,” Ufer says, and are “committed to local produce–and committed to local charities and organizations.”
