I found this article very interesting. I'm the Monroe County Community College Ophthalmic Assistant Program Director and one of my December 2011 graduates was employed by the Ann Arbor News. My full-time program is only 10 weeks long and graduates are prepared for entry-level jobs in the eye care field, as an assistant/technician working for an optometrist or ophthalmologist. The first class was in August of 2008 and the 15th group will graduate on May 18th. The cost of $3,599 includes the text, a pocket guide, flashcards, dissection lab, uniform allowance and CPR/AED certification. Class size is limited to 10 to allow individual attention and sufficient hands-on time during the clinical internship (last several weeks of the program). The course takes place at Reed Vision by Mercy in Monroe, MI and Toledo and Oregon, OH. Our placement rate has been VERY good, with employment at the U of M Kellogg Eye Center, Reed Vision by Mercy, TLC, Lansing Ophthalmology, Glaucoma Center of Michigan, Retina Consultants, Huron Ophthalmology, Castleman Eye Center, Michigan Eyecare Institute and the Rahmani Eye Institute, just to name a few!
