The Natural History Museums Annex

I Spy: May 2014

by Sally Bjork

From the May, 2014 issue

"April's I Spy is the Natural History Museums Annex next to North Hall," writes Michael McGraw. "Both [are] now slated to be demolished." It's "being knocked down to build yet another UM science building," adds Rebecca Sweeton. (The new building will house the departments of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology and Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, as well as exhibit space for the Anthropology, Natural History, Paleontology, and Zoology museums.)

"I first thought [the photo] might be North Hall," writes Tom Jameson, "but when I went to look, found that it was next door." Tom was not alone; five others pegged the building as North Hall. Several also commented on the (coincidental) coverage of North Hall and the Museums Annex in the April feature about U-M Homeopathic Hospital--Judi Taylor notes the Annex's "beginnings as the Homeopathic Hospital's Children's ward."

Lyn Latta Sleator recognized the front door of the Museums Annex "immediately.... My father worked there for the Institute of Fisheries Research ... from the early fifties until he died in 2008." She and her siblings have "fond memories of the building" including its "distinctive smell."

Eleven entrants correctly identified the Museums Annex. Our winner, drawn randomly from the correct entries, is Tom Jameson. He'll enjoy his $25 gift certificate at Seva.
