When the Hash Bash returns to the U-M Diag on April 7, it will be without longtime master of ceremonies Adam Brook. Brook, who once ran a hydroponics store in the Kerrytown district (see photo), currently resides at the Parnell Correction Facility in Jackson.
Brook was arrested last year after a police raid turned up more than a pound of marijuana and three loaded guns in his Royal Oak home. Brook’s registration as a medical marijuana caregiver had expired, and the amount far exceeded what a caregiver is permitted to possess. He was sentenced last fall to two years.
In an email, new Bash organizer Andrew Kent calls Brook “a very passionate activist” whose efforts “have saved the Hash Bash on many occasions … Before he was arrested he paid income tax. Instead, we now waste tax dollars incarcerating him.” Supporter Melissa Griggs, secretary of the Macomb County chapter of the National Organization of Marijuana Laws, calls him a “political prisoner”—and is selling “Free Adam Brook Now” T-shirts to raise money for Brook’s prison store account. Don’t look for them on the Diag since the university denied organizers’ request for a vending permit. Instead, she’ll sell them at the NORML booth at the Monroe St. Fair (see Events).
