Kelly Hadin, a former classical ballet dancer who performed around the country, has opened Shine on Fourth Avenue. This is the second Shine–she opened the first in Royal Oak six years ago. Though she doesn’t own the gift store, she’s chief buyer and manager for two silent owners.

Hadin says repeat customers hone the merchandise in a gift shop. She hopes to cultivate in Ann Arbor a similar loyal clientele who “show up on all the major holidays and birthdays in their lives.” She carries everything from baby gifts to fine art photography. She points out some favorites, like the subtly and unusually scented (cultured sake, Portuguese olive blossom) Kobo soy candles and a water-powered clock. Most merchandise is in the $10-$30 range, and she offers free gift wrapping.
