Shaker State Quick Oil Change
Fake Ad: August 2013
by Jay Forstner
We received nearly 200 entries correctly identifying the Fake Ad for Shaker State Quick Oil Change on page 58 of the August issue. Not suprisingly, our nemesis Dean McLaughlin was quick to provide a reason for the plethora of responses.
"Obvious in every sense," McLaughlin wrote. "The name Lube suggested an obvious category of product for the ad. ... I'd have expected more ingenuity from you. As it was, I found the ad on the first casual go-thru. Shucks!"
Emily Brown of Howell thought the offer of a free Shaker lemon pie was enticing, and hoped there would be more Shaker-themed enticements. "Besides getting a free lemon pie with every fifth oil change," she wrote, "you get to sit on elegant hand-crafted furniture in the waiting room!"
Daniel Jarrell complimented us, and we like that, so we'll print his comment here: "This was, if you'll pardon the expression, pretty slick. ... Nicely done."
Our winner, who is choosing a gift certificate for the Gandy Dancer, was Ann Arbor's Sanelma Heinonen. Ugh.
To enter this month's contest, find the Fake Ad in the September issue and follow the instructions in the box on the Back Page. The Fake Ad always contains the name of last month's winner in some form.
