When a female sports star visited Ann Arbor last September, dinner at Zingerman’s Roadhouse was high on the agenda. But while her coach dined, Sadie and her fellow competitors spent the evening in a van in the restaurant’s parking lot.

Sadie is a Scottish terrier. She and her “coach”– handler Gabriel Rangel–had just competed at a dog show in Dundee. Sadie’s owners, Dan and Amelia Musser, had come to see them in the ring, and the dogs were headed to the Mussers’ kennel in Laingsburg, near Lansing, for the night. En route, the party stopped at the Roadhouse for dinner with the Mussers’ daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Jamie Agnew–better know locally as owners of Aunt Agatha’s Mystery Bookshop.

Even then, Sadie was a celebrity in Scottie circles, with more than 100 best-in-show ribbons. But the four-year-old crossed over to national fame on February 16 when she took the top prize at the canine Olympics–the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.

After winning two other national titles–the Philadelphia National Dog Show and the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship–Sadie had been the favorite going in. Still, says Agnew, her parents were “a little bit stunned” when she took the Triple Crown.

Sadie seemed untroubled by her new fame: when she won the Scottie group earlier in the day, the Los Angeles Times reported, she seemed more interested in the treat Rangel had waiting. That doesn’t surprise Agnew. Her parents’ dogs are multilingual–their trainers are Mexican, Dutch, Japanese, and Welsh–and “Sadie knows the word for ‘hot dog’ in five languages.”
