Q: What’s the history behind the two red towers on the residential property at 4500 Washtenaw Ave.? The entire property looks like it must predate most of the A2-Ypsi community.

A: This substantial parcel lies along a busy corridor but remains a tranquil place. In 1950 Charles Gault (Ypsi High Class of 1924) created the pond that today offers an urban refuge for ducks and blue heron, and he erected the now-rusted towers. He had a passion for shortwave radio. From his basement radio room he communicated with radio operators from Russia to the South Pole.
