North Hall

I Spy: June 2014

by Sally Bjork

From the June, 2014 issue

Next door to last month's feature is the building many guessed then. "North Hall," identifies Susan Daron. "This is rather ironic," writes Bob DeBona, "since last month I was speculating that the old ROTC building" was the feature. But it's this month that features "... the 'Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps Officer Education' building adjacent to the Museum Annex," which was pictured last month.

During the Vietnam War, the ROTC building was the site of several antiwar protests. According to Will Hathaway, who relayed a story in April shared with him by former U-M vice president James Brinkerhoff, the windows were broken so often that the university replaced them with Plexiglas. "Brinkerhoff laughed when he recalled how [the protesters] were surprised to have their projectiles bounce back at them," relays Hathaway. "It's ironic," he continues, that after so many "antiwar protesters targeted North Hall ... it is the University that is tearing it down." This summer, the building will be razed for a new biosciences complex. ROTC's temporary home is in the Chemistry building; ultimately, the corps will move to the Observatory Lodge, at the corner of Observatory and Washington Heights.

Despite the numerous guesses for North Hall last month, Bob's and Susan's were the only entries received in May. Bob DeBona was our random drawing winner; he selected Grizzly Peak Brewing Company/Old German for his $25 gift certificate.

To enter this month's contest, use the photo and clue on the Back Page of the June issue to identify the scene, then follow the instructions at the bottom of the page.    (end of article)
