How do you describe that Polaris Slingshot in the window of what used to be Nicholson’s and is now Freeride Powersports? “It’s a Batmobile!” replies general manager Ron Quinkert.

The Iowa-built three-wheeler looks like a souped-up dune buggy, or perhaps a drag-racing golf cart, and costs twenty grand. Even so, “they’re flying off the shelves,” says Quinkert. Classified for legal purposes as a motorcycle, the low-riding trike can go up to 130 mph.

Robert Mechigian and Scott Meterko bought Nicholson’s last year, and after some debate decided to change the name. As promised, they’ve expanded into quads, ATVs, ORVs, and watercraft, though the store still specializes in the Japanese motorcycles Nicholson’s was known for; they’re dealers for Kawasaki and Yamaha.

Meterko and Mechigian gave the space a thorough going-over. They knocked out some interior walls, refinished the floors, and repaved and repainted the parking lot–they even painted in some narrower motorcycle slots. Seems like a no-brainer for a cycle dealership, but Quinkert laughs: “Oddly enough, it’s rare.”
