Q. How long has there been a butterfly garden at Gallup Park? Who decided it should be there?

A. The Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden was started in 1989 by the Ann Arbor Rotary North service club, and the Rotarians continue to maintain the butterfly-shaped garden for the city. The parks department helps with the maintenance, and has also installed picnic benches and signage to create a good habitat for humans.

Twenty-seven species of butterflies can be observed in the garden, including two unique to our area: the Wild Indigo Duskywing and the Harvester (the only predatory butterfly in Michigan). Hummingbirds are most abundant in August and September, when both young and mature birds migrate through the area.
