Last month’s Fake Ad, for Arborville Heating and Cooling on page 60 of the August issue, contained an image of a three-dollar bill. Many Fake Adders figured out that the last name of the previous month’s winner, “Hoover,” was conveyed in the name of the person depicted on the bill.
“Now I’ve seen it all!” wrote Kathleen Kennedy. “You’ve hidden names in letters, numbers, other words, but this one is the best! A picture of all things.”
About ten entrants asserted that the picture was of former FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, including insights into everything from the origin of the FBI to rumors that J. Edgar was a cross-dresser.
All of that was fascinating, but the person portrayed on our imaginary bill isn’t J. Edgar Hoover; it’s former president Herbert Hoover (1929-1933).
Tom Glowacki had it all figured out. “On page 60, the picture in the $3.00 bill looks strangely like Herbert Hoover from the Wikipedia site,” he wrote. “Coincidence? Conspiracy? You tell me!”
