An Evening of Sports Poetry

Fake Ad January 2014

by Jay Forstner

From the February, 2014 issue

"What a treat it was to see Gerald V. Hern's Boston Post poem, 'Spahn and Sain and Pray for Rain' from 1948 used in your ad!" wrote Bruce Conforth in his entry this month. "Sain was such a great pitcher! Anyway, the Fake Ad is The Evening of Sports Poetry on page 55!"

Conforth said it all. Well, almost all. The complete poem is, "First we'll use Spahn, then we'll use Sain. Then an off day, followed by rain. Back will come Spahn followed by Sain. And followed we hope by two days of rain." The poem immortalized the two pitchers, who starred for the Boston Braves.

"Johnny Sain ... was the Tigers' pitching coach in the 60's," added Carol Mousigian. "They reworked that prose during the '68 pennant year to read 'Lolich and McLain, pray for rain.'"

We received 115 entries correctly identifying the January Fake Ad. Tessa Roth was chosen as our winner. She's taking her gift certificate to Whole Foods Market.
