Community, a Walgreen’s Pharmacy has opened in Washtenaw Commons. The pharmacy is only a half-mile away from the main Walgreen’s location at Washtenaw Ave. and Huron Pkwy., but that store’s assistant manager, Darrel Noye, tells us that the two serve very different purposes.

Noye describes Community as “a local specialty pharmacy.” It carries specialty medications and treatments for chronic or serious illnesses like cystic fibrosis, HIV, Hepatitis C, Crohn’s disease, and multiple sclerosis.

Unlike Walgreens’ regular pharmacies, which exist in tandem with stores carrying groceries, beauty supplies, and health products, Community pharmacies carry almost exclusively medicine, and focus on building relationships with patients who may have to visit the pharmacy frequently. The pharmacy’s small size reflects those goals: it’s not much bigger than an average hallway, with a counter at the end.
